<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Abstract art is wonderful, but it can be problematic when you want to delve into it. How do you explain it to youngsters? How can you facilitate the creation of intriguing abstract art without it becoming a mushy mess? There are probably many good methods for this, but here is a suggestion for one way to go about it. You will find that their natural brush strokes lend themselves perfectly to abstract art.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Materials:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Good quality tempera or acrylic paint.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Heavy weight paper.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Images of abstract art.Try Kandinsky,Pollock, Miro, Rothko, or whatever are your favorites.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Critique</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1. Show some images of abstract art to the students.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2. Ask questions about it. Allow them to answer, one at a time. Sometimes it can be difficult to delve into a "critique" with little ones, but the more you do it, the more they will understand that they must takes turns speaking. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3. Discuss the idea that abstract art is basically lines, shapes and color.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Production</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the keys to producing non-muddy abstract paintings is to let the paint dry between steps. This might be tricky if you see your students once a week, as it might take too long to finish the work. Another method is to have them thoroughly dry their brush in between colors by wiping it on a towel without using water.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1. Give the students 3 or 4 colors of paint. Start by painting some basic shapes anywhere on the paper. Remind them to make them big, and they can't overlap. Don't mix the colors. Demonstrate. You can also have them turn their paper different directions as they paint, so as to get away from making all the shapes in a straight line. Allow the paint to dry.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2. Give the students 3 or 4 different colors than they had before. They will paint in the background and around their shapes. Remind them to paint thickly, and not to paint over their shapes. Allow to dry.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3. Give students black and white paint. Instruct on painting different types of line; zig zag, straight, curly, etc. They will paint these anywhere on the paper. Rinse brush, and use white paint to do more lines. They can outline some of their shapes or make dots. Remind them not to paint a picture of a flower or truck, as these are just lines and shapes! Also, remind them to keep the lines separate and don't paint white on top of black.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Materials:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Colored permanent markers</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">1. This lesson plan allows the students to choose and draw very simple patterns. You could also adapt this to holiday time and students can make a festive tea or coffee cup.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">2. Give suggestions to students on drawing very simple patterns in the background and on the cup. Instruct to use basic easy patterns with simple lines and shapes. Also stress that patterns should not be too small and squished together.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;">You may provide one or more types of cup templates for students to use, or guide them in drawing their own. They can add their own type of handle, and they will also draw a saucer underneath. Instruct on drawing the horizontal line halfway across. They will then draw their patterns on the cup, background and foreground.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Materials:</span></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">12X15 lime, light or dark green paper</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">Oil pastels in shades of green</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">Tempera or acrylic paints</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">Colored markers</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">Black paper</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">Images of various insects</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">A template for a magnifying glass appr. 5 or 6 inches in diameter.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">1. Discuss the concept of magnification with students. This applies to science. If you have actual magnifying glasses to let them experi</span><span style="font-family: Arial;">ment with, that is awesome, but you could also show images of various objects in magnification.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">2. Discuss sizes, colors and parts of insects. Note that insects can be many varying colors. Allow the students to choose which insect they would like to draw, after looking at various images to get ideas. (You will most likely have a lot of girls choosing ladybugs and boys choosing spiders, so it is up to you on how many of those you end up with!) Emphasize to students that the bugs should have a head, thorax and abdomen. It should also fit onto a 5 or 6 inch piece of paper, so that it will be a "magnified" insect. Direct students to draw it large. They can add colors and details with colored permanent markers. They should also color greens around the insect with oil pastel.</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">3. Students will draw the grass on their green piece of paper. Instruct on how to draw blades of grass with oil pastels without it being too scribbly.</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">4. Students can them paint some flowers on their grass with acrylic paint. Some of the paint might go thinly over the oil pastel, so they may need to do another coat. They can also paint a tiny insect somewhere in the grass if they wish.</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">5. Make some templates of a simple magnifying glass shape and have students trace and cut out of black paper, or you can make the magnifying glasses for them. Students will glue magnifying glass onto their insect paper, making sure it fits correctly over the insect, and trim off the excess paper around the black round part.</span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Arial;">6. Students will glue the magnifying glass with insect onto their flower background. </span><br />

<span style="color: magenta; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><span style="color: magenta;">Milk Jug Masks</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1tG31Rvmq9M/Ug68JQMTkRI/AAAAAAAAApE/YAidtNtqKD0/s1600/053.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1tG31Rvmq9M/Ug68JQMTkRI/AAAAAAAAApE/YAidtNtqKD0/s320/053.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">There are so many possibilities when using milk jugs as the armature for a mask, and of course, there are many types of masks to make. I did this project with 4th gr. We discussed the idea of masks, and looked at different types, from animal, African, masquerade, Chinese, and also "fantasy" masks. I prepared and set out a variety of materials the students could use.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> The major key to success in this project is to have the students brainstorm and draw a sketch of the mask they would like to make. It could be just about any type of mask, but insist that once the sketch is done, they must stick to that idea and not change their minds later. Otherwise, you will have many wasted materials. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Materials:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">1. Gallon milk jugs, cut with scissors halfway down, with the handle side being used for the mask. You can save the other plastic and cut into strips or other shapes to use with the mask. The beauty of these jugs is that it is easy to cut and punch holes using a hole punch and scissors</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">2. Colored tissue paper</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">3. Glue and water</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">4. Paint</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">5. Materials such as plastic bottle caps, felt, fun foam, feathers, sequins, wire, raffia, pom poms, beads, fabric, chenille stems, and whatever else you can think of!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">6. Tacky glue</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Procedure:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> 1. Make sure that students have done a sketch with a completed idea for a mask. I allowed them to do any type of mask they wished (within reason) but if you want to keep it to a theme, that works too. I provided a pre-drawn drawing of an outline of the shape of the mask to make it a little easier for them to visualize the shape of the mask. Emphasize that the mask front can be with the spout part up or down. Once the sketches are done, keep them and let students use them for reference. Once again, insist that they stick with their original idea. They can add to it as they go along or slightly modify it, but many times they will want to completely change their idea, once they see the different materials set out. This results in wasted materials and a mask that is not good quality.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> 2.Have them write their name with marker on the underside of the mask. They will choose a colored tissue paper, tear it into strips and glue onto the jug, covering entirely and smoothly. You may also use newspaper.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> 3.Once dry, they may paint the mask any way they wish that fits with their idea. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> 4. Adding designs, features and embellishments- I have found it works best to set out only the paint for one or two days, and wait for everyone to finish that step before you move on to the next step. There can be so many materials for this project, that the students can get overwhelmed by the choices if you set them out all at once. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> 5. Give them a paper plate or a little bowl for each student to put her/his supplies in. Set them all out on a table, and they can choose what they want to use, and keep it in their bowl for next time. It helps to make sure one or a few students don't take more of a supply than they really need.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> 6. You can punch holes in the plastic to tie wire, raffia, or chenille stems to the mask. Bottle caps with glass beads can be used for eyes. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> It is so much fun to see their ideas!</span><br />

<br />
Materials:<br />
<br />
White paper 9X12<br />
Beige paper<br />
Red felt<br />
Scrap paper<br />
Buttons<br />
Beads<br />
Leaves<br />
Strips of mat board<br />
Sand<br />
<br />
1. Cut the beige paper into 3 inch wide strips. Have students tear the strips down lengthwise to give it an uneven look. This will be the sand at the bottom.<br />
2. Cut the 9X12 felt in half. Give each student a half. They will cut an oval shape, or they can trace an oval template, and cut out. <br />
3. Glue the sand strip at the bottom of the white paper.<br />
4. Glue the oval felt shape right above the sand.<br />
5. Have various small pieces of scrap paper. Students will cut out rings and circles and glue them onto the crab body.<br />
6. They can cut several triangle shapes for the legs, and glue those on the sides. Crabs have eight legs, but it might be difficult to fit them all, so they could do 3 on each side.<br />
7. Apply glue across bottom of beige paper, sprinkle sand over it, let dry.<br />
8. Add buttons and beads for the eyes.<br />
9. Cut strips of mat board very thinly on a paper cutter. Cut to be about 4 inches long.<br />
10. Glue these on for antennas.<br />
11. Gather some leaves that would work for the crab claws. Press them in a book overnight to help keep them from drying out. (I learned the hard way, if you don't do this, the leaves will crumble after they are glued on)<br />
12. Cut the leaves in half, and glue on to make the claws<br />
13. Apply ModPodge on the leaves to help preserve them.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Materials:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">White paper 9X12</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Light blue paper</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Blue watercolor</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">White pastel</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Black marker</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1. Have students draw little waves on the white paper with the white pastel</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2. They will paint over the paper with the watercolor, and the waves will show through.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3. They can cut about 3 inches off of the paper, and glue onto the lt. blue paper.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4. Provide a tear drop size template about 4 inches long for the shark. (Or, you may let them free draw the shape)</span></div>

Very cute, and also has opportunities to bring in other concepts, which is a great thing about book based lessons.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;"> We read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Carle. We discussed topics such as healthy and unhealthy foods and what is a good food for a caterpillar. <span style="color: #b45f06; font-family: Arial; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;">I frequently hear myself saying to my students "and remember, no scribble scrabble." Most students don't intend to do it, but just forget to take the time to color solidly. However, there are times, when a scribble look is desired. These chickens (or could be any bird) are great for younger students.</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;">Materials:</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;">9X12 paper (I used tan, for a more rustic look)</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;">Rust/orange paint</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;">Yellow paper</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;">Brown or white paper for egg</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;"> 1, Demonstrate to students how to go back and forth in different directions with the brush on the paper, starting in the middle. (Take it away before they do too much)</span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial;"> 2. Let dry and add a small yellow triangle for a beak and yellow strips of paper for hay.</span><br />

<span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-77gq5K1fZL0/UEforyQfLzI/AAAAAAAAAfg/KwRvrD8FTwk/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-77gq5K1fZL0/UEforyQfLzI/AAAAAAAAAfg/KwRvrD8FTwk/s400/002.JPG" width="345" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The eternal art teachers habit: saving stuff! As my students have used up markers, I have saved the lids, knowing that somehow, someday I would use them for something. I wanted to make a new sign for my room, so I decided to make a wreath.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Get a styrofoam wreath; whatever size you wish. You may want to cover it with fabric or paint it, just to cover up the white styrofoam. I used some blue ribbon I had already.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PU_3_zMO0Og/UEfqKfY1xBI/AAAAAAAAAfo/5AICWoV7dwc/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PU_3_zMO0Og/UEfqKfY1xBI/AAAAAAAAAfo/5AICWoV7dwc/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. Glue on marker caps. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6Xzso_n7ODA/UEfvUgBErZI/AAAAAAAAAgw/BFsig7ZDMEI/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="215" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6Xzso_n7ODA/UEfvUgBErZI/AAAAAAAAAgw/BFsig7ZDMEI/s320/005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Glue caps to the top and inside circle around the wreath.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RxO13uF67N4/UEfq7WC1dZI/AAAAAAAAAf8/TwQsmkEsz1A/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="64" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RxO13uF67N4/UEfq7WC1dZI/AAAAAAAAAf8/TwQsmkEsz1A/s320/005.JPG" style="filter: alpha(opacity=30); left: 194px; opacity: 0.3; position: absolute; top: 1229px;" width="96" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yTVX-06WXsY/UEftf6xqI4I/AAAAAAAAAgg/e2Pp-24sK_8/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="307" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yTVX-06WXsY/UEftf6xqI4I/AAAAAAAAAgg/e2Pp-24sK_8/s320/006.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made a "bow" from caps, then glued on used colored pencils on the top. I attached a ribbon to the back for hanging and some small letters attached with colored wire. Get a wreath hanger and hang!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OedAiGRoXLU/UEfeYtbPCKI/AAAAAAAAAeI/NpKePZNyEBk/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="156" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OedAiGRoXLU/UEfeYtbPCKI/AAAAAAAAAeI/NpKePZNyEBk/s200/010.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
1. Use wide craft sticks. You may wish to paint them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LHNdF-PNASk/UEfewDQKSLI/AAAAAAAAAeQ/TlWOPflVMgU/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LHNdF-PNASk/UEfewDQKSLI/AAAAAAAAAeQ/TlWOPflVMgU/s200/001.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
2.Choose a favorite art image and print it to appr. 5X7 size.<br />
Also print a wallet size image for the front of the box.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
3. Cover with clear contact paper to help them last longer. You can also varnish the sticks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vyNxpweNA54/UEfge5IMetI/AAAAAAAAAek/2QulUfk6EzI/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vyNxpweNA54/UEfge5IMetI/AAAAAAAAAek/2QulUfk6EzI/s320/008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Line up the sticks straight. Glue the image onto the sticks. Let dry</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PtWJdH5axBU/UEfiB-PnuRI/AAAAAAAAAes/aWMU-824aVc/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PtWJdH5axBU/UEfiB-PnuRI/AAAAAAAAAes/aWMU-824aVc/s320/015.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

5. Turn the glued sticks upside down, and using an exacto knife, cut in between each stick.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kWCwJjvWNNg/UEfijGUbcwI/AAAAAAAAAe0/1vMEpYEF5U8/s1600/017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="254" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kWCwJjvWNNg/UEfijGUbcwI/AAAAAAAAAe0/1vMEpYEF5U8/s320/017.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Glue or tape the wallet size image onto a plastic box and place stick puzzle into box. These seem like they would be very easy puzzles to do, but they are actually challenging, and elementary age students enjoy them. I use them as an early finisher activity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: x-large;">Simple Self Portraits</span></h2>
<br />
I don't know about you, but self portraits actually aren't my favorite lesson to do with young students. I have found that trying to place too much emphasis on realism and proportion in the traditional way usually ends up with more students feeling frustrated than successful. After all, faces and people are the hardest thing to draw! We look at ourselves every day, yet our left brain gets in the way and makes us draw what we think we look like, instead of what is really there. (Drawing On the right Side of the Brain, by Edwards,does an excellent job explaining this)<br />
<br />
Anyway, I did find a good idea on<a href="http://www.artprojectsforkids.org/search/label/artist%20Hundertwasser" target="_blank"> Art Projects for Kids</a> for a simplified way to do self portraits. It simply uses a circle for the head shape, and allows the students to draw simple lines for the nose and mouth. <br />
<br />
Materials:<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4kyOrx2MVY4/T_pvTtL44rI/AAAAAAAAAdo/9_PEcbK8YqY/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4kyOrx2MVY4/T_pvTtL44rI/AAAAAAAAAdo/9_PEcbK8YqY/s320/015.JPG" width="239" /></a><br />
Circle templates<br />
White 9X12 paper<br />
Rulers<br />
Markers<br />
Chalk pastels in skin colors <br />
<br />
1. Have students measure a one inch border around the paper, then a 1/4 inch inside that. (I have found that measuring is one of the most challenging tasks for students, but a good learning opportunity for them.)<br />
<br />
2. Students will trace the circle template exactly in the middle of the frame.<br />
<br />
3. Eyes- This project gives the big eye look, but if you prefer, you can do the eyes in regular proportion. You can provide a template or not. Instruct to draw a football shape, round iris, and round pupil. It is important to get the eyes evenly spaced and the same size.<br />
<br />
4. Draw a small curved line for the nose.<br />
<br />
5. Draw a "flying bird shape" for the mouth. Girls can draw lips, and boys can draw just a curved line for the mouth. No teeth!<br />
<br />
6. Draw diagonal lines down from the head for shoulders.<br />
<br />
7. I find that chalk pastels work best for shading in faces. They can blend it in with their finger, so their are no scribble lines. If students have darker skin, have them build the color slowly, so it is more even.<br />
<br />
8. Students can use colored pencil or a light peach/pink marker for the nose and mouth. <br />
<br />
9. Hair- Oh hair! Challenging! I found the best luck with coloring in lightly with a light cream chalk pastel, and then brown, darker brown, in layers over the top. more yellow/white for blondes. They can make some of the hair go out of the frame slightly. Instruct to make the hairline long enough and not forget the sides of the head. For students with short hair, or pony tails, don't forget to draw ears!<br />
<br />
10. Clothes, they can color those any way they wish.<br />
<br />
11. Background and frame can also be colored in whatever colors they wish.<br />
<br />
12. They can write their name at the bottom, and color in with marker.<br />
<br />

</div>
<br />
This lesson is based on the book by Van Camp and illustrated by Littlechild. I had the idea to combine some of the book's ideas with ideas of Chagall.<br />
<br />
Materials:<br />
<br />
Paper, cut to 12X15<br />
Oil pastels<br />
Liquid watercolors<br />
Permanent markers<br />
Foam scrap booking dots.<br />
<br />
1. Read book to students. Discuss the idea of fantasy and the way the horses are depicted.<br />
2. This can be done with or without a border. We did a simple one inch border with one inch squares.<br />
3.. Do guided drawing for background. Divide the paper into three sections going in diagonals. Use oil pastels to draw very simple lines and shapes, like moons, suns, flower, bird, etc. Emphasize a kind of dreamy quality, like Chagall.They can turn the paper upside down and sideways when drawing shapes. Also emphasize drawing simple outlines of shapes.<br />
4. In one of the three sections, they can draw lines or patterns to fill it in.<br />
5. Do watercolor washes over the pastel drawing. <br />
6. Instruct on drawing a horse with basic shapes, on a separate piece of paper. The horse should be about 6 inches long. They can draw the mane and tail how they wish, and add color and simple lines and shapes with oil pastel or permanent markers.<br />
7. They should cut out the horse carefully and place on the foam dots to make it stand out from the background.<br />

A simple project to do with Kinder's or 1st gr.<br />
<br />
Materials:<br />
<br />
Paper plates<br />
Heavy duty foil<br />
White paint.<br />
Black or dark blue paper 9X12<br />
Touch of glitter, (if desired)<br />
Small cardboard box<br />
Toothbrushes or spray bottles<br />
<br />
1. If you are brave enough, let students draw and cut their own crescent shape from the paper plate, otherwise, pre-cut the crescent shapes.<br />
2. Students will cover the moon shape with foil. Demonstrate keeping it along the curve. They can put some glue on the crescent shape beforehand, to help hold the foil in place. Remind them to cover the entire moon, and not leave open spaces. (This takes some patience)<br />
3. Have students flick white paint onto black paper with the toothbrush, to create stars and milky way or they can use a spray bottle to spray it on. (Paint must be thinned) (Place the paper inside the box on its side)<br />
4. Glue foil moon onto paper. You can add touches of silver glitter.<br />
<br />

The drawing instructions for the cowboy come from "I Can Draw People" by Usborne.<br />
<br />
1. Draw a light horizon line.<br />
2. Instruct on drawing the cowboy(girl) figure step by step,(circle head, rectangle torso,curved arms and legs, boots, pants,vest rope, etc) Remind students to save room for the rope.<br />
3. Students can then add details to the picture such as colors, patterns on the clothes, and hair.<br />
4. color with markers and/or oil pastel.<br />
5. Use watercolor to paint in foreground and sky.<br />
6. Add detail, such as a cactus.<br />

<br />
Take Heed! You will end up with a lot of paper shreds on the floor!<br />
<br />
Materials :<br />
<br />
Brown grocery bags<br />
Green paper<br />
Brown paper<br />
Beige scrap paper (like manila) that has been shredded. (You can cut it into shorter pieces)<br />
Red vinyl or pleather.<br />
Red paint<br />
Other colored paper<br />
<br />
1. Cut brown paper into long triangle shapes, appr. 10X18 inches. Students will partly roll the wide end to form the crust. Glue down.<br />
2. Paint the triangle, or slice, with red paint for the sauce.<br />
3. Once dry, let students glue on items they want on their pizza. They can cut out little sausage, tomatoe, pineapple, green onion pieces from paper.<br />
4. Students can cut out circles from vinyl, or teacher can do for smaller children.<br />

</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img height="200" id="il_fi" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qS0V_mn0lAI/TqjO5jTeR-I/AAAAAAAAAbA/kHEKkelyT3Y/s200/go_away_big_green_monster.jpg" style="padding-bottom: 8px; padding-right: 8px; padding-top: 8px;" width="200" /></div>
<br />
A more detailed version of this lesson plan can be found on<a href="http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/educators/lessons.aspx?facet:ArtsSubjectName=Visual+Arts&facet:GradeBandName=K-4&q=monster#results" target="_blank"> ArtsEdge</a><br />
<br />
This lesson explores the connections between visual art and language arts, and how both are used to creatively tell stories and express emotions. Students will read the book <i>Go Away Big Green Monster</i> by Ed Emberley. They will be introduced to adjectives as descriptive words then create their own monsters using paper sculpture techniques.<br />
<br />
Materials:<br />
<br />
Black const. papercut to 12X18<br />
Colored const.paper.<br />
Ideas for paper sculpture (twisting, curling, folding,etc)<br />
White chalk or pastel<br />
Sample list of adjectives<br />
<br />
1. Read book to students. Discuss the use of adjectives in the book, and ask volunteers to think of some good adjectives. ( discuss adjectives that describe an emotion or the way something looks.<br />
<br />
* It is up to you to decide to use a sample adjective list. I usually do this project with 2nd graders and sometimes we end up with a lot of the same adjectives. Encourage using a very unusual adjective.<br />
<br />
2.Instruct that once they have decided on an adjective, to think of how they will make their monster look like that word.<br />
<br />
3. All parts of the monster face will be cut from paper, no drawing. Instruct that the head must be big, almost as wide as the black paper, and it can be any shape (not nessesarily round)<br />
<br />
4. They will write the words at the top half of the black paper: Go Away Big <u> </u>Monster with their chosen adjective written in the blank.<br />
<br />
5. Demonstrate how they can make their paper parts "stick out" by bending, curling, cutting and folding the paper different ways. <br />
<br />
6. They will create their monster keeping in mind to make it look like their adjective.<br />

I have an abundance of baby food jars, so we used those instead of ceramic pots.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tHthWLvgn-8/T9FS9afhivI/AAAAAAAAAU8/2NE-Br-CF2o/s1600/spring+blossoms+kinder+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="287" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tHthWLvgn-8/T9FS9afhivI/AAAAAAAAAU8/2NE-Br-CF2o/s400/spring+blossoms+kinder+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Materials:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Twigs, about 10 inches</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pink, and white tissue paper squares</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Baby Food Jars</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Florist foam pieces</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dried moss</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Twine or ribbon</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tacky glue</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1.If you do this with young ones, give students a jar with sticks already poked into some foam inside the jar. This is easier, as students might crush or break the foam.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
2. Students will crinkle the tissue and glue it onto the sticks. Remind them that they can make some "buds" also.<br />
3. When done let them place some moss on the top of the jar, and push it around and down so that it fits snugly.<br />
4. Tie the twine or ribbon onto the jar.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uiJ8Ccuduvc/T9FVq9J74rI/AAAAAAAAAVI/cATB368If_A/s1600/spring+blossoms+kinder.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uiJ8Ccuduvc/T9FVq9J74rI/AAAAAAAAAVI/cATB368If_A/s400/spring+blossoms+kinder.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
These can be used for Mothers Day. If desired students can use paint markers to write something on the jar.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11197613282541475809noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8996324626881199386.post-44321856489294216772012-06-06T22:09:00.002-07:002013-02-02T20:20:29.925-08:00"Blumpy" Shapes<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is a womderful video of painter Elizabeth Murray from<a href="http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/elizabeth-murray" target="_blank"> art 21</a> While this is a stellar website, many artist profiles have content not suitable for children, but this is one that my students really enjoy. She describes the shapes she paints as "cartoony" and" blumpy." Her art is the inspiration for this abstract art project.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. After you've finished viewing the video, discuss her art and what the students noticed about it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Do a guided practice drawing where students draw shapes that are poking or squeezing against each other. They can be hard edged against rounded and have holes in them. Emphasize drawing shapes of different sizes and going different directions. They can draw shadows inside the holes to give depth. and shadows at the edges of shapes.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This can easily be tied to science, with the concepts of force and motion, and anatomy. The cultural exemplar is<a href="http://www.haringkids.com/" target="_blank"> Keith Haring</a> and his book <a href="http://www.haringkids.com/master_b_sleep.htm" target="_blank">Dance</a>.Students can practice drawing proportion and motion in the basic way that Haring did. First students make a "skeleton" in motion using macaroni and pasta, then render a color figure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Materials:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Michael Jackson clip:<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfZiL2z7Kuw" target="_blank"> YouTube</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Pasta lima beans and macaroni, including elbow, straight, shells, penne, fusilli.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Colored paper 9X12<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Black paper 9X12<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Black marker<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Skelton diagrams<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Another exemplar I used was Michael Jackson, and his distinctive dance skills. You could also show other examples of dancers, gymnasts and atheletic abilities to emphasize how our bodies can work. If you really want to take some time with it, you can coordinate with the PE teacher some dance moves for the kids to learn. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
1. Show the Haring image above and have some of the students come forward and mimic one of the moves in a pose. This enhances their observational skills.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
2. Give students a black sheet of paper. You can have them paint the pasta pieces white, or leave it natural. Pass out skeleton papers. Set out bowls of macaroni and have them construct their skeleton in a pose or "stop motion" of some kind. Remind them to start close to the top or bottom, so there is enough room.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Part II<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
1. Ifyou wish, they can render the same pose as their skeleton, or they can choose a different one for their Haring type figure. Give some guided practice on drawing the figure in the stick figure/bubble method. Again, encourage them to make it big enough. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
a, Start with a round head<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
b.Draw the rest of the body as a stick figure</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
c. Draw a bubble around the stick figure. (They always want to draw it too skinny, so allow them to practice a few times.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2.Once they have it down, they will draw it on their colored piece of paper and cut it out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. They will choose a different color of paper for the floor, cut to 4"X9" They will glue this on the bottom of the other paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. They will glue the figure onto the paper, in the placement they wish. (upside down, in the air, etc.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Outline the figure in black marker and draw a line across the top of the floor. Add large polka dots to the floor. Draw some motion lines around the figure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

Move around a lot in the classroom. It is good exercise and helps students stay on task.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">9. Always have tissues and band aids. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">8. Greet students when they come into class.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">7. Kids like to tattle, and teachers are who they tattle to. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">6. Never use sarcasm.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">5. </span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">Encourage curiosity over right answers.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">4. Don't talk too much. They hardly hear a word we say anyway, (and talking louder won't help.)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">3. Teachers really do have their favorites, but they usually get the least attention.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">2. Have faith in students and discourage neediness.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: large;">1. Last year, I thought I might try something a little different for the first project back to school, and we made some summer scenes, because well, it still feels like summer in TX. when we go back to school! <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5.Put a couple dabs of tacky glue in the slits and slide the tail and fins into them and let dry. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />6. Students can place colored dots on the tube for scales. Place one at the top for an eye, or paint it, then draw an eyeball.</div>
